Laws can vary significantly from state to state, and while some might seem unusual or silly, they often have a historical or practical reason for being on the books. And because Hampton & Pigott operates out of the state of Colorado, we thought it might be fun and interesting to look at some of our state’s seemingly odd or silly laws.
Hunting is a big part of Colorado culture, but don’t ride a horse while doing it! In Colorado, it is illegal to hunt while riding a horse or any other animal. The law may have historical origins related to conservation efforts and fair hunting practices.
It is illegal to let your pet pig run freely on a highway. While this law might seem unusual, it's likely in place to prevent accidents and keep animals safe. Honestly, this is a pretty good rule of thumb whether it was illegal or not.
Colorado law specifies that it is illegal to throw missiles at a car. While the term "missiles" typically refers to weapons, it is a general safety law that discourages any dangerous behavior toward vehicles.
In Boulder, it's against the law to have a couch on your front porch. The city has implemented this rule to maintain neighborhood aesthetics and prevent unwanted items from accumulating outdoors.
Did you know that it is illegal to attach a vacuum cleaner to your pet cat or dog, even for humorous purposes? While this law may seem silly at first glance, it really aims to discourage animal cruelty or mistreatment.
In some Colorado towns, it's illegal to fly a kite on the street or highway. While it may seem unnecessary, this law is likely in place to prevent accidents and disruptions to traffic flow. And really, keeping all activities other than driving out of functional streets is a good thing.
It's important to note that many of these laws are rarely enforced or have become outdated over time. They may serve as historical remnants or reflect the local culture and values of their respective areas.
