Mike Melito and Damian Horne spearhead Hampton & Pigott’s military defense team. Mr. Melito’s experience in complex litigation, racketeering, and the criminal law field goes back to his service in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Starting in 1999, he served as both a prosecutor and defense counsel participating in well over one hundred courts-martial. Mr. Melito is a graduate of the United States Army Judge Advocate’s School. He also attended the Naval JAG school on temporary assignment to receive death penalty and classified trial training. During his time as a Judge Advocate, then Major Melito served at both Fort Carson and Fort Bragg defending servicemembers charged with murder, rape and forceable sodomy, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, conspiracy (crime rings), distribution of drugs, distribution of child pornography, wire fraud, extortion, assault, bank fraud, arson, bribery and graft, insurance fraud, extortion, and war crimes.
Mr. Melito’s success as a defense attorney is born of his experience and success as a prosecutor. In mid-2005, Mr. Melito left the military to join the Office of the Colorado Attorney General. For nearly two years as the Chief Litigator of the Education Unit, he advised numerous state educational agencies and litigated dozens of cases in federal court, state court, and a multitude of state administrative courts and quasi-judicial boards. In the spring of 2007, Mr. Melito returned to the criminal law field joining the Criminal Justice Section prosecuting racketeering cases, complex white-collar crimes, tax offenses, drug trafficking rings, and environmental crimes. Michael earned numerous awards, including drug prosecutor of the year, for pioneering complex financial approaches in the prosecution and dismantling of large-scale marijuana trafficking rings.
Mr. Melito received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Boston College and a J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. He is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, the United States District Court of Colorado and the State of Colorado.
Mr. Melito is a member of the following professional organizations and bar associations: Colorado State Bar, Maryland State Bar (inactive status as of August 2005), 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court District of Colorado, United States Supreme Court, Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, Colorado Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association - Military and Veterans Section, Arapahoe County Bar Association, Colorado Environmental Task Force (Co-founder), Colorado District Attorney Council, and the Western States Project (Instructor since 2007).
